I watched a webinar recently about young textiles artists from quite different parts of our complex world. Their enthusiasm and confidence filled the screen, they knew exactly what they were doing and why and were obviously certain of their message and purpose. I remember being like that.

I’m now at the other end of the spectrum from these young artists and despite all my years of experience, I’ve never felt quite so uncertain. My work isn’t activist or political, but it does address meaningful purpose in today’s world, or so it seems to me. Otherwise, many might say, why bother?

Its theme is autobiographical and moves in the realms of contradiction. It examines inconsistency, incongruence,  ambivalence, paradox and conflict, confronting the inherent tension that exists between these incompatible states of being. It feels dark yet compulsive, with no end point in sight. Answers cease to matter here.
